Dillard’s Exclusive Interview with Lucky Brand Designer Jonathan Lippert

Q: Who is the typical Lucky Brand woman?
A: She’s free-spirited and artistic, someone with a unique approach to style who doesn’t take life too seriously.

Q: Where do you draw most of your inspiration for your designs?
A: All kinds of great ideas come from flea markets and vintage shops, and then it gets a touch of free-spirited Southern California. Our prints and ornaments are also inspired by different cultures around the world. It’s a great mix of old and new that results in some truly unique details.

Q: Who are your major influences?
A: Anyone who is passionate about what they do.

Q: What do you feel you bring to the industry?
A: I think I’ve brought a nice balance between feminine dress and the casual lifestyle. Lucky Brand shoes are great for a walk near the beach (or around the mall) as well as for a night out.

Q: What’s the ultimate message you want to get across through your shoes?
A: I think shoes say a lot about someone’s personality, so don’t be afraid to express yourself through Lucky Brand shoes!

Q: Did you attend school for design or are you self-taught?
A: I have a degree in economics, but realized my passion was for design and footwear, so I switched gears and pursued a design program in New York.

Q: What are some of your favorite shoes in the line?
A: That is like choosing your favorite child — I’m not sure I can do that. But if I really had to choose, I would say right now that I am obsessed with our Emmie ballet (it’s just “flat out” perfect), and I think every woman probably wants a Miller wedge because it’s just so comfortable but still trendy. Our Dyana is a great summer option for a ballet and the ankle strap makes it sexy, too.

Q: What are some key trends we will see from your line next season?
A: I’m big on color in boots/booties (our leathers translate really well into rich jewel tones). I’m also on board with the moto trend that’s happening, and new interpretations of western. Oh, and of course, ballet flats in all shapes and sizes.

Q: Tell us about a shoe you will never forget.
A: While I was in the footwear program, I designed an equestrian boot/mule/flat. It was pretty creative, but I was so proud of it. That was a shoe nobody could forget!

Q: Which shoe should no woman be without?
A: The perfect ballet flat: Lucky’s Emmie!

5 Reasons We Love Wedges

Although perfectly suited for summer, wedges have earned our year-round devotion (wedge boots, we miss you!). Still haven’t warmed up to the style? We’ve counted the ways we love them, so you can too.  Don’t just take our word for it. Check out what our customers said about these 5-Star favorites.

5. Quality Relationship

You can spend many happy seasons with a great wedge. Unlike some height-boosting silhouettes, wedge outsoles make full contact with the ground so they wear gradually and evenly. Plus, their standard one-piece construction eliminates the dreaded “my spike heel just feel off” fashion emergency.

4. Swoon-Worthy Styles

You can find a wedge to match nearly any occasion — or mood. They look beachy with maxi dresses, dramatic with mini skirts and polished with pencils.  From casual flip flops to metallic dazzlers, your wedge sole mate is out there.

3. Outdoor-Friendly Heel

Outdoor events and wedges are our favorite power couple. The wide outsole won’t sink into grass and shouldn’t get stuck in the mud. For laid-back outings, wedges are often welcome where pumps may be too dressy. Yes, it’s possible to lift your look at your next BBQ, outdoor wedding or picnic at the park.

2. Figure-Flattering Features

Wedges balance legs so they appear  longer and leaner. What’s not to love? To capitalize on their flattering power, look for nude hues, peep toes and T-straps.

1. Major Height, Stable Comfort

And the number one reason we’re head over heels? The comfortable height. Again, a wedge outsole makes full contact with the ground so your foot is fully supported. As a bonus, many wedges also have platforms. This smart feature reduces the pitch of the heel for an even more confident step.

Espadrille: Word of the Week

Dramatic wedges or casual flats, espadrilles epitomize summery style. What makes an espadrille an espadrille? The beachy, rope-wrapped sole.

Espadrille   [n.] \ˈes-pə-ˌdril\ summer-perfect shoe with a jute-wrapped midsole
Examples of espadrilles.

As a rule, this relaxed detail gets along famously with your sunniest work-to-weekend pieces. The other espadrille rule? There are no rules. Whether you love ankle straps or prefer peep-toes, you’ll find the perfect silhouette for you.

Channel beach-inspired style on and off the clock with the Antonio Melani Tate women’s wedge. Patent adds unexpected polish above the rope-wrapped wedge. Team the round toe with an authoritative pencil skirt and a structured blouse for a work-right look with summer attitude.

Today, most designers lift espadrilles on a wedge heel, but the classics were flat. GB Gianni Bini updates the iconic style with a fresh, citrusy hue and crochet detail. This easy option is perfect for vacation, a laid-back day poolside or an outdoor party. Just add statement shorts and a breezy tank.

A sophisticated colorblock design qualifies the Isola Olencia sandal for an evening event. The goldtone T-strap gilds the patent silhouette with statement shine. Balance a vibrant frock with this neutral silhouette for a sizzling nightime look.

Prim & Punchy

Why We Love It: Ladylike styles reign supreme every spring. But this season, our favorite designers took it one step further. Bows, rosettes and floral print adorn everything from pointed-toe pumps to gladiator sandals.

How to Wear It: Follow the 3 P’s: prim, proper and pink. Spring’s power color loves a feminine flourish at the feet. These demure designs also look smart set against sharp blouses and cropped pants.

What to Wear: 1. Antonio Melani Britt Pumps 2. Betsey Johnson Haylie Sandals 3. GB Gianni Bini Eye-Candy Sandals

’20s Glamour

Why We Love It: It’s no secret that fashion loves a good throwback. Spring 2012 takes us to the 1920s — but there’s a twist. Shine, studs and color update the era’s signature T-strap shoes.

How to Wear It: Pleated skirts and beaded tops touch on ’20s heritage without being costume-y.  For a thoroughly modern look, turn to animal prints and minimalist silhouettes.

What to Wear: 1. Gianni Bini Kelli T-Strap Platform Sandals 2. Antonio Melani Reina Sandals 3. Gianni Bini Cheryl T-Strap Platform Sandals

Global Influence

Why We Love It: Rich textures, tribal prints, vibrant colors, dense beading — this trend is a visual and tactile treat.

How to Wear It: The beauty of the global look is this: it feels at home wherever you go. Wear raffia wedges with your favorite work looks and enliven weekend dresses with tribal-print flats.

What to Wear: 1. Sbicca Tristan Platform Wedge Sandals 2. Arturo Chiang Lily Sandals 3. Lucky Brand Emmie Flats

Shoes: Seafaring Style by Gianni Bini

Crisp and classic as a day by the sea, nautical pieces are a spring and summer staple. New to the look? You don’t have to dive in with head-to-toe stripes. Test the waters with seafaring shoes. Our maritime favorites link vintage charm with of-the-moment edge. We love what Gianni Bini did with the style this season.

  1. The Gianni Bini Mariner Wedge: Beach-ready canvas and rope detail at the toe secure the shipshape charm of this slip-on. Showcase the leg-lengthening silhouette with cropped pants, skinny jeans or a pleated midi skirt.
  2. The Gianni Bini Calypso Sandal: Navy and white stripes — a quintessential nautical motif — span this sandal. An architectural platform and chunky heel boosts the shoe with bold height.
  3. The Gianni Bini Ginger Pump: This platform pump embodies vintage glamour with feminine lines and a playfully knotted peep toe. Textural topstitching and the stacked heel keep the look fresh.

Other Seaworthy Options: You can also make a splash with flats. Just look for sailor stripes or playful polka dots in your favorite combinations of navy, white, neutrals and red.

  2. Gianni Bini Candy Flats

Ease into Spring: Transitional Shoe Silhouettes

Add a touch of spring to your step with season-to-season silhouettes. Taking these versatile shapes from winter to spring is a breeze. Slip on textured tights for cold weather wear; shed the layer and style with dresses or cropped pants as the temperature rises. Here are our favorite transitional options.

  1. Short and Sweet: Add Western whimsy to your look with the Gyn boot from Steve Madden. With a closed toe and sassy ankle height, the timeless silhouette is equally prepared for blustery days or spring sun.
  2. Breezy Bands: Chunky bands wrap the BCBGeneration Jiorn with bold versatility. Unexpected openings on this bootie-inspired shape keep the sandal relevant no matter the temperature.
  3. Crisp Cutouts: Don’t let the word “sandal” fool you; you can wear the Vince Camuto Pabla year round. The studded silhouette strikes an ideal balance between coverage and cutouts, so you’ll be ready for lingering chills and warming temps.

We love anything with an unexpected peep-toe or surprising straps for season-spanning style. Do you have a transitional go-to in your closet? If so, share your favorites.
