Fashion Forward: The Shift Dress

Edgy Vs. Sweet: 2 Ways to Wear Leather

From subtle trim on a jacket to second-skin leggings, leather is a luxurious and versatile fall trend. We pulled some of our favorite leather and faux-leather designs and styled them two different ways — first edgy and then sweet. Simply choose the statement that suits your personal aesthetic best. Or, mix elements from both for unexpected contrast.

The Legging

Edgy: Create a tough look that’s also figure-friendly by focusing on sharp lines and smart proportions. Balance skinny tux-stripe leggings with a tailored tailcoat jacket. It not only provides back coverage, but also draws the eye upward with bold color. A lace top and leopard-print pump add femme fatale texture, while geometric-inspired accessories complete the razor-sharp statement. 
Sweet: Take the dress-over-tights combo to the next level with faux-leather-stripe leggings instead of expected opaques. A feminine dress, preferably with a fluttery hem, keeps the coupling light and flattering. Finish with a cutout wedge, classic satchel and bling ring.

The Dress

Sweet: When composing a feminine leather look you can wear to work, consider the 3 P’s: polished, powerful and pretty.  Faux-leather panels cut into an ivory sheath for a curve-contouring effect. An exotic satchel, cap-toe pump and tailored hoop earring speak to classic sensibilities.
Edgy: Nothing pairs better with leather than leather — especially in contrasting colors and textures. We styled a brown leather dress and classic black jacket with a black moto boot to take the rule-breaking motif from head to toe. Add a buttery cross-body bag (in yet another shade of leather) and a swipe of red lipstick for bad-girl beauty.

The Top

Edgy: Don’t just borrow from the boys — borrow from the  best-dressed boys. Made-over menswear pieces, like a tuxedo-inspired top, slim-fit tailored pant and metallic-toe smoking loafer, strike a balance between tough and glam. Metallic accessories in varying shades of gold make the transition from desk to drinks almost too easy.
Sweet: Take a black leather top from all-out edgy to playfully feminine with a mix of whimsical and witty accessories. Think bows, polka dots, pearls and unabashedly girly shades of pink.

Q: Who is the typical Steve Madden woman?
A: The typical Steve Madden girl is your everyday woman. She’s confident and cutting edge.

Q: Where do you draw most of your inspiration for your designs?
A: I draw my inspiration from everything I’m surrounded by, from people who walk the streets of the world to my love for music. Over the past 20 years I’ve found that many different things inspire me to continue creating.

Q: Who are your major influences?
A: I’m influenced by anyone who impacts art and commerce, like Warhol and The Beatles.

Q: What do you feel you bring to the industry?
A: The number one goal of our company is to make cool shoes and second to make money for our investors.

Q: What’s the ultimate message you want to get across through your shoes?
A: That you don’t have to spend a fortune to look great.

Q: Did you attend school for design or are you self-taught?
A: I’m self taught! I started out in the shoe business when I was 16 as a stock boy.

Q: What are some of your favorite shoes in the line?
A:  Conncord, Dejavu, Masqraid

Q: What are some key trends we will see from your line next season?
A: Lower heels.

A: The SLINKY – it’s one of my first and biggest hits.

Step Outside the Box in White Jeans


Okay fellas, it’s time to step outside the box. In fact, it’s time to shatter the box into a million tiny pieces. The way to do that is with white jeans.

White pants are not just for sailors or milkmen (do they still exist these days?). They’re for the man who’s not afraid to be fashion forward. Use any pair of these white jeans to achieve one of our favorite looks.

For a casual look this summer, pair your white jeans with a V-neck tee and boat shoes without socks. You can layer this look with an open sportshirt with rolled sleeves. This effortless, carefree style is perfect for a coffee date or outdoor festival.

For a dressier look more suited to an evening date or a trip to a trendy nightclub, pair white jeans with a gingham dress shirt and dark vest . Choose casual oxfords or loafers to complete the look.

For an office-ready look, choose a white shirt and striped blazer. Add color with a not-too-bold tie and finish the look with dress shoes.
