Rush Week: What to Wear

Planning Rush Week looks can be a daunting task. Our top tip? Choose clothes and accessories that you not only feel comfortable in, but also speak to your unique personality. We broke down the sorority recruitment process by day (though schedules vary by university) so you can impress stress-free.

Comfort is key on your first day as you’ll be walking from house to house. Pair your school-issued tee with tailored shorts, cropped pants or a preppy skirt. (We picked a pink pant that’s playful yet polished.) Your secret weapon on this busy day? Blotting tissues. They’ll ensure you’re fresh-faced and oil-free from the first house to the last.
Shop Our Picks: Sanctuary Clothing Cropped Pants, Michael Kors Watch, Bobbi Brown Blotting Tissues, Michael Kors Earrings, Sam Edelman Sandals

Take things up a notch with a sundress. Look to feminine styles with prints or textures to subtly set your look apart. If you still have several houses to visit, opt for a shimmery yet smart flat. When you get down to the final tours, lift your look with a pump or wedge. We chose a bejeweled wedge that catches the sunlight with every step. A cheerful nail polish —  we especially love this coral shade — is a constant reminder that this week is all about having fun and finding your place.
Shop Our Picks: M.S.S.P. Printed Dress, Gianni Bini Wedge, Michael Kors Bracelet, Guerlain Emilio Pucci Nail Lacquer, Anna & Ava Necklace, Vince Camuto Metallic Flat, Gianni Bini Lace Dress

Stand out from the crowd of black dresses with a saturated jewel tone. On-trend details, like one-shoulder necklines and peplums, create a sharp look that also complements your figure. Don’t go too heavy with your accessories. Instead, select one or two statement pieces that truly shine.
Shop Our Picks: Gianni Bini Pump, R.J. Graziano Earrings, R.J. Graziano Bracelets, Gianni Bini Peplum Dress

Keep it fun and simple on this special day. Since you’ll be running to meet your new sisters, slip into the flat sandal you wore on your first day. Wear a lightweight, fitted camisole or top you can layer under the T-shirt your house will give you. There will be plenty of photographs to commemorate the day — so don’t forget your lip gloss for flawless shots.
Shop Our Picks: Gianni Bini Shorts, C&C California Tank, Sam Edelman Sandal, BCBGeneration Sweet Bracelet, Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss, Lilly Pulitzer Sorority iPhone Case

Sam Edelman: Dillard’s Exclusive Interview

Q: Who is the typical Sam Edelman woman?
A:
She is trend-savvy and loves to go out with her friends. Her drink of choice is a vodka soda.

Q: Where do you draw most of your inspiration for your designs?
A:
All over the world; from the runways of Europe to the history books of fashion, from global kitchens to the movies, from new books to the innovation of fashion and design.

Q:  Who are your major influences?
A:
Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo and Jackie Kennedy.

Q: What do you feel you bring to the industry?
A:
I bring a certain element of style and panache. Women love my shoes because I know what they need in their wardrobe and I focus on style and comfort while always adding a bit of whimsy to my designs.

Q: What’s the ultimate message you want to get across through your shoes?
A:
I want women to know they can have attainable luxury without putting a hole in their bank account.

Q: Did you attend school for design or are you self-taught?
A:
My family was in the leather and shoe business, so growing up I was constantly exposed to design and fashion. I studied theatre, language and philosophy. I’ve also studied women since the age of 13!

Q: What are some key trends we will see from your line next season?
A:
For fall, cowboy is a huge trend.  We love Western and are influenced by a modern take on Hopalong Cassidy. There is nothing sexier than a woman in tight jeans, a white tee and a pair of vintage-looking cowboy boots. I was also inspired by a more refined take on rock ‘n’ roll. Think of a glamorous take on Steve McQueen’s classic motorcycle style.

Q: Tell us about a shoe you will never forget.
A:
Our shoe called the Angelina. It was a moccasin on a wedge. It was our first big shoe when we launched Sam Edelman. We were the first to break all the rules.

Q: Which shoe should no woman be without?
A:
Every woman should have 3 great pairs of ballet flats.  Our Felicia is perfect for just that with new colors every season. And a library of sandals for the summer —  we love the Gigi.

Style It: 3 Ways to Wear Your White Tee

Deceptively simple, the white tee is your closet’s MVP (Most Versatile Piece). More than a casual basic, this essential is a wardrobe workhorse you can turn to any time. We took an Alternative Apparel top from work to evening to errands — it’s a smart staple that merits more than one wear a week.

  1. 9-to-5 Polish: For a refreshingly lightweight feel that’s also sleek, trade your button-down blouse for a white tee. Tuck your tee into a prim pencil skirt and pair with a structured bag and pump for a professional finish. But don’t forget your statement necklace — neon pops perfectly against the blank canvas.
  2. After-Hours Concert: Who says the white tee doesn’t have personality? A colored jean, asymmetric vest and fringed boot take the tee from clean-cut to edgy. Add a vintage-inspired bag and you’ll stand out in even the most crowded venue.
  3. Weekend Errands: Everyone runs errands — run yours with style. For a clever take on comfortable, pair your white tee with relaxed shorts and animal-print sneakers. A roomy tote (in durable nylon) boasts plenty of room for shopping lists and impulse purchases. Iconic aviator sunglasses let you go incognito if you so choose.
