Nautical Know-How: Spring 2013 Trends

Adrift after a drab winter? Warm up with our favorite nautical looks. Don’t reserve seafaring style for the beach (although, it’s perfect for resort) — maritime pieces work as a crisp pick-me-up any day of the week.

White and navy are nautical stalwarts — pop the pairing with red, orange or yellow. You can also expand the palette with other ocean-inspired hues like seafoam green and cobalt.

Shop the Looks: Calvin Klein Crewneck Tie-Waist Dress & Swarovski “Holly” Starfish-Pendant Double-Chain Necklace, Antonio Melani Tiago Belted Peplum Dress, Lauren Ralph Lauren Textured Leather Belt & MICHAEL Michael Kors Ionna Patent Pumps, Lauren Ralph Lauren Cotton-Blend Button JacketMICHAEL Michael Kors Dolman-Sleeve Stripe Top

Nautical stripes are bold and classic. We love clean navy/white pieces, but unexpected bursts of neon or sparkle set a fresh course. Another subtle update: trade navy bands for black.

Shop the Looks: Cremieux Lina Stripe Knit Dress, IQ Paris Striped Hi-Low DressMICHAEL Michael Kors Button-Front Blazer

Decked out with buckle accents and chain prints,  the MICHAEL Michael Kors resort line takes a refined approach to nautical. Whether you are packing for a getaway or headed to the office, you’ll find a striking piece to sail your wardrobe into the next season.

The Right Coat for Every Event

Whether it’s the first thing your hostess sees when you hand over that bottle of wine or the last thing your friends see as you leave the restaurant, the right coat is worth choosing carefully. Here are some of our favorite ideas for matching the right coat to any situation.

around_town

The Coat: The rich red color of this Jessica Simpson double-breasted coat brings out the roses in your winter-pale cheeks, and the flattering cut emphasizes your figure instead of hiding it.

Wear it with: These NYDJ ponte leggings in black or dark grey knit are the perfect counterpoint to the red hue and elongate the line of your leg. Ideal for layering, the Awake scoopneck tunic adds warmth without bulk so the line of the coat falls exactly as it should. Finish the look with Alter Ego smoking slippers from GB Gianni Bini in a fun, unexpected leopard print for an added touch of flair.

Wear it with: This season’s bold, decadent coated Legacy jeans from Rich & Skinny show that you’re in touch with the latest trends. Perfect for adding shape under a boxy cropped jacket, this wintry light ash Vince Camuto faux-wrap knit top adds volume at the neckline for an eye-catching half-zipped look. Sleek Harty snake-print pumps, also from Vince Camuto, dial up this edgy style by just a notch.

The Coat: Make working out easier to get worked up about with a coat that lets you look great while you’re staying healthy. We love the Mighty Lite III jacket from Columbia, which combines ultra-lightweight fabric with slim construction that won’t throw off your stride on a winter run.

Wear it with: Under Armour has your active ensemble covered. The Perfect workout pants make exercise a cinch with lightweight, low-friction fabric and superior moisture management. Add a splash of bold color, not to mention the latest active fabric technology, with the ColdGear fitted mockneck top. For the right support, try the seamless workout bra, then pack your gear in stylish ease with the tough fabric and pretty ruched details of the Shatter gym duffle bag.

Dillard’s Exclusive Interview with DMSX Designer Neal Salisbury

Q: Who is the typical DMSX woman?
A: She has a rocker-chic attitude, yet is uncontrived.

Q: Where do you draw most of your inspiration for your designs?
A: Art is a huge influence on my life. I consider myself an artist not a designer. Music is also a huge influence on my life as well.

Q: Who are your major influences?
A: My mother and my girlfriend and two English Springer Spaniels, Posh and Beckham give me great inspirations. I am a huge Prince fan and the influence of him and his music have been a huge inspiration behind DMSX — the purple as a visual ID.

Q: What do you feel you bring to the industry?
A: The collection is aimed at a younger audience, who naturally has a smaller budget but also understands quality. This customer is not really getting what they want in the market right now. She’s looking for a product that has a little more status but doesn’t want to spend $500 or $600 on a pair of boots. The contemporary market is underserved, lacking distinct and fashion-forward styles for the customer who aspires for luxe, so this was our answer.

Q: What’s the ultimate message you want to get across through your shoes?
A: DMSX is sexy without trying too hard.  It’s bold but pulled back at the same time.

Q: Did you attend school for design or are you self-taught?
A: My mother enrolled me in an oil painting class at the age of 7, so art had been around me all my life. However, I actually went to Fairfield University for biology in an attempt to be a veterinarian. After getting my master’s in animal science at URI, I found that I enjoyed reading Vogue more than science journals. I made the switch to become a shoe designer taking classes at RISD then finally getting a degree in accessories from FIT.

Q: What are some of your favorite shoes in the line?
A: The Tammy and the Tneal and the Siena are everything that represents DMSX in one boot, one pump and one flat.  The bold zipper is my autograph.

Q: What are some key trends we will see from your line next season?
A: For the DMSX Spring 2012 collection , sobriety is the key word, with discrete design details. There will be uppers with new woven and laser-cut leather details, as well as liquid metals. The use of black and specchio, as well as the contrast of black and white with accents of grey, ice, plume, violet and forest. The details that are used maintain my design philosophy of simple, minimal and sexy without trying too hard.

Q: Tell us about a shoe you will never forget.
A: It actually was a shoe that never made the DMSX line but is my favorite piece I have designed to date — it was a triple platform over-the-knee boot.

Q: Which shoe should no woman be without?
A: She needs them all!

The Dress and The Rest: Ladylike Looks

Trends come and go, but one fashion staple never goes out of style — the dress. This timeless silhouette is favored year after year, season after season. This fall, pair flawless lines and feminine details with chic accessories for a classic look.

The Dress: In rich allspice ponte knit, this Antonio Melani Navey dress is an excellent alternative to basic black. The silhouette hugs your curves and hides problem areas with a box-pleated peplum. Contoured seaming, a rounded V-neck and effortless cap sleeves ensure a classic, uncomplicated fit.

The Rest: The clean lines of this stunning dress call for  jewelry that accents the dress without taking away from it. From the kate spade new york Bright Spot collection, this necklace adds a touch of sparkle and shine with a crystal-encrusted pendant. Bring the glimmer to your ears with the matching stud earrings. The Red Magma ring from Glitterings gives you a statement piece in coordinating and cutting-edge red magma crystal rocks. Complete the look with luxurious burgundy suede pumps from Steve Madden and a fresh, feminine fragrance like Chloe.

Shop the look: Antonio Melani Navey Peplum Dress, kate spade new york Bright Spot Mini Pendant Necklace, kate spade new york Bright Spot Stud Earrings, Glitterings Red Magma Statement RingSteve Madden Remmedy Suede Pumps and Chloe Eau de Parfum Spray.

The Dress: Simple yet stunning, this knit dress from Vince Camuto is a versatile day-to-evening piece. A unique draped crossover detail at the waist flatters your curves, while a V-back and exposed back zipper add modern edge.

The Rest: The Nora clutch from Vince Camuto is luxe and sleek with deceptively simple black and goldtone accents. Real fur and leather ensure vintage glam. Continue the sophistication with Elvin booties from Vince Camuto in soft suede and fierce glossy croco leather. Crystal stud hoop earrings from R.J. Graziano accent the goldtone hardware of the Nora clutch, keeping the look modern. Add a nude lipstick, like Dior Rouge Dior Nude in Twill, to balance the fiery red of your dress.

Shop the look: Vince Camuto Boatneck Knit Dress, Vince Camuto Nora Clutch, Vince Camuto Elvin Mixed-Media BootiesR.J. Graziano Crystal Studs Hoop Earrings and Dior Rouge Dior Nude Lipstick.

The Dress: Allover favela red lace makes a sultry statement in this Lizzie lace dress from French Connection. Contrasting white lining and simple construction make a pretty picture.

The Rest: From Roberta Chiarella, a statement necklace in turquoise stones splashes color into your wardrobe and emboldens this look. Pull it all together with the Thea chain tassel box clutch from BCBGMAXAZRIA in textured teal. The Geen pump from Guess is sophisticated in a sky-high heel yet doesn’t detract with its natural color. A rosy, feminine blush goes well with this ladylike lace dress. We like the Guerlain Rose Aux Joues blush duo in Golden High.

d’Orsay Pumps: Word of the Week

Sometimes fashion gives us happy coincidences. An especially brilliant stroke: d’Orsay shoes share their name with the d’Orsay museum in Paris. Unlike the museum’s impressionist masterpieces, d’Orsay pumps are wearable works of art.

Showcase the flattering style with an evening-out LBD or polished pencil skirt. The sultry silhouette sculpts your legs to create a longer, leaner look. The delicate design, available in neutral, bright or shimmering palettes, also blends well with your special occasion looks.

Your Summer Uniform: fresh takes on classic pieces, like tailored shirts with bright pencils or cropped pants

In a rut? Peep toes give ballets a summery spin. Also, smoking loafers couple the flat heel you love with a luxurious menswear-inspired attitude.

Feet First: Spring 2012 Shoe Trends

Spring style starts with shoes. Strappy sandals, flats, wedges, pumps, espadrilles — the abundance of choices is thrilling and overwhelming. To make your search simpler, we did the trend spotting for you. Check out our top Spring 2012 trends.

Prim & Punchy

Why We Love It: Ladylike styles reign supreme every spring. But this season, our favorite designers took it one step further. Bows, rosettes and floral print adorn everything from pointed-toe pumps to gladiator sandals.

How to Wear It: Follow the 3 P’s: prim, proper and pink. Spring’s power color loves a feminine flourish at the feet. These demure designs also look smart set against sharp blouses and cropped pants.

What to Wear: 1. Antonio Melani Britt Pumps 2. Betsey Johnson Haylie Sandals 3. GB Gianni Bini Eye-Candy Sandals

’20s Glamour

Why We Love It: It’s no secret that fashion loves a good throwback. Spring 2012 takes us to the 1920s — but there’s a twist. Shine, studs and color update the era’s signature T-strap shoes.

How to Wear It: Pleated skirts and beaded tops touch on ’20s heritage without being costume-y.  For a thoroughly modern look, turn to animal prints and minimalist silhouettes.

What to Wear: 1. Gianni Bini Kelli T-Strap Platform Sandals 2. Antonio Melani Reina Sandals 3. Gianni Bini Cheryl T-Strap Platform Sandals

Global Influence

Why We Love It: Rich textures, tribal prints, vibrant colors, dense beading — this trend is a visual and tactile treat.

How to Wear It: The beauty of the global look is this: it feels at home wherever you go. Wear raffia wedges with your favorite work looks and enliven weekend dresses with tribal-print flats.

What to Wear: 1. Sbicca Tristan Platform Wedge Sandals 2. Arturo Chiang Lily Sandals 3. Lucky Brand Emmie Flats

Shoes: Seafaring Style by Gianni Bini

Crisp and classic as a day by the sea, nautical pieces are a spring and summer staple. New to the look? You don’t have to dive in with head-to-toe stripes. Test the waters with seafaring shoes. Our maritime favorites link vintage charm with of-the-moment edge. We love what Gianni Bini did with the style this season.

  1. The Gianni Bini Mariner Wedge: Beach-ready canvas and rope detail at the toe secure the shipshape charm of this slip-on. Showcase the leg-lengthening silhouette with cropped pants, skinny jeans or a pleated midi skirt.
  2. The Gianni Bini Calypso Sandal: Navy and white stripes — a quintessential nautical motif — span this sandal. An architectural platform and chunky heel boosts the shoe with bold height.
  3. The Gianni Bini Ginger Pump: This platform pump embodies vintage glamour with feminine lines and a playfully knotted peep toe. Textural topstitching and the stacked heel keep the look fresh.

Other Seaworthy Options: You can also make a splash with flats. Just look for sailor stripes or playful polka dots in your favorite combinations of navy, white, neutrals and red.

  1. Gianni Bini Minnie Flats
  2. Gianni Bini Candy Flats
  3. Gianni Bini Matey Flats
