Fashion Forward: The Shift Dress

Do you want a dress that you can throw on and run out the door looking great? Meet fashion’s most effortless shape — the shift dress. A shift dress is a short, loose-fitting silhouette that hangs from the shoulders and features straight lines that don’t cinch the waist or hug the curves.

The origins of the style can be traced back to the flapper fashions of the 1920s, which moved away from the corset in favor of looser shapes, exposed arms and legs and very little waist definition. Showing up in fashion through the decades, this silhouette is most closely identified with the “mod” look of the 1960s when it was worn by cultural icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Twiggy.

Today, this versatile dress has become a wardrobe hero and is suitable for just about any environment, whether it’s at the office or on the town.

The Dress: We love the lattice-print hemline, neckline and cuffs, as well as the floral motif on this shift dress from Donna Morgan. It’s perfect for running errands or even attending Sunday brunch.

The Rest: Grab the Jet Set Monogram East-West Tote Bag to carry all your errand-running essentials and elevate your look with these Calvin Klein Vivian platform sandals. Add sparkle with some stud earrings and a tri-tone bangle set.  Brightening Finishing Powder illuminates your face and pairs well with this complexion-friendly dress.

Bronzers: Get a Sun-Kissed Glow

One of our favorite beauty products to use for summer? Bronzers. They give you a healthy glow, add a touch of delicate shimmer and create face-flattering contour.

Products to try: 1. Lancome Star Bronzer Long Lasting Bronzing Powder Natural Glow 2. Too Faced Peach Leopard Bronzer 3. Guerlain Terra Soleia Tan Enhancing Bronzer Face Decollete

Tool: 4. MAC 150 Large Powder Brush (it’s less dense than a bronzer brush so it won’t pick up as much product)

Application: Sweep the bronzer across your hairline, temples, cheekbones and jawline. Dust a tiny bit over your nose, collarbone and (if your are wearing your hair up or pulled back) over the tops of your ears. Doing this will give you that lightly kissed-by-the-sun look. If you choose a product that has added shimmer you can even sweep it across your shoulders when you wear something strapless for an added touch of light-catching shine.

Products to try: MAC Bronzing Powder, Dior Diorskin Shimmer Star, Too Faced Absolutely Invisible Candlelight Powder

Tools: Studio Gear #15 Angled Bronzer Brush, Dior Backstage Cheek Brush, MAC #109 Small Contour Brush

  1. Starting with your bronzer brush and bronzer, suck in your cheeks as hard as you can and make a “fishy” face. Apply your bronzer in the hollow area this creates. Guide your brush upwards along the curve of the hollow. It should be similar to the line and angle of your jaw.
  2. Now, get your blush and blush brush. Give yourself a big smile in the mirror and apply your blush to the apples of your cheeks (the apple is where your cheeks poof out the most when you smile) and then sweep it up towards your temple.  Next, without adding any additional blush to your brush, blend it in with your bronzer to smooth harsh lines. If you move your brush in small circles, you will achieve a natural-looking blend.
  3. Lastly, get your powder brush and highlight color. Dust a small bit (a little goes a long way) right below the eye and onto the cheek bone. If you smile again your cheekbones are easy to find — it’s the flat part above the apple. Pull the brush out towards the temple, and you are finished. Just like that, you have a contoured and defined cheek!

Lips & Tips: Get Matchy-Matchy

The hottest trend in beauty right now? Matching your lipstick or lipgloss to your nail polish. We love making a bright and colorful statement with our nails and lips, and luckily MAC Cosmetics and butter London polishes are on board too.

The Lippy collection from butter London took five of their most popular nail shades and created a matching lipgloss.

The Fashion Set from MAC does the same thing but goes one step further with matching a lipsticklipglass and nail lacquer.

Match your pucker to your digits at Dillards.com.

Juniors Prom Trends: Bright Colors

Brilliant brights are one of this season’s biggest trends. From juicy citrus hues to bold berries, you can’t go wrong with a splash of color at prom.

  1. We love the eye-catching neon coral shade of this Morgan & Co. H-Back dress. Play up the sparkle on the straps and waist by adding some crystal chandelier earrings.
  2. Accessorizing is made easy with the necklace-illusion halter on this Hailey Logan chiffon dress. Add a statement bangle to complete the look.
  3. Take your look from elegant to party-ready with a convertible dress. When it’s time to bust a move, just remove the added skirt layers on this Morgan & Co. tiered dress for dance floor worthy styling.

Going with a neutral dress? You can still add a touch of the trend to your look through your manicure.

  1. A classic hot pink hue, like Steamy from MAC, looks great against black or prints. When pairing with other brights look to a complimentary color like lime green to make it pop.
  2. Whether you are going for a sunny dress or keeping it classic in ivory or neutral, a jewel toned mani in Purple Passion from Estee Lauder will keep your fingertips on-trend.
  3. If you can’t wait to put on your sky-blue gown, or you chose a striking silver shade, then Orange You Glad You Came from Michael Marcus is the lacquer for you.

Bright Idea: How to Wear Bold Spring Colors

Meet spring’s best and brightest hues: orange, yellow, cobalt and pink. Read on to learn why we love them and how to wear them.

Intense Orange

Why We Love It: Citrusy and refreshing, orange embodies the spirit of spring. Pantone® even named Tangerine Tango the official color of 2012.
How to Wear It: Don’t be intimidated — this warm shade is flattering against most skin tones. For colorblock looks, orange works well with blue, purple, pink and red. Want just a taste? Sweeten your style with an orange lip or nail color.
What to Wear: 1. Gianni Bini Johnson Jacket 2. BCBGeneration Print Dress 3. Gianni Bini Jessica Dress 4. butter LONDON Nail Lacquer

Not-So Mellow Yellow

Why We Love It: Once restricted to pastel offerings, yellow is back and brighter than ever. Our favorite shades run a sun-kissed spectrum, from soft to shocking and everything in between.
How to Wear It: We love yellow with natural colors and textures, like nude, white and raffia. Style a yellow blouse or blazer with crisp white pants for an office look that’s cheerfully chic.
What to Wear: 1. Calvin Klein Chiffon Dress 2. BB Dakota Chiffon Blouse 3. Tahari by ASL Sleeveless Dress 4. Gianni Bini Clarice Dress

Cool Cobalt

Why We Love It: Rich and saturated, cobalt will quench even the strongest color cravings. An added perk? Unlike many blues, it pairs well with denim.
How to Wear It: Cobalt coupled with green is our current obsession — but we love this crisp shade with just about everything. Turn to shoes and jewelry for a quick fix that you can add to any look.
What to Wear: 1. Gianni Bini Suella Dress 2. Buffalo Ophelia Jacket 3. Buffalo Claribel Top 4. Anna & Ava Zebra Ring & Jessica Simpson Marcie Wedge

Powerful Pink

Why We Love It: It’s the new power color. A feistier take on past pinks,  this season’s shade is strong and confident.
How to Wear It: Even as an accent, pink packs a punch. But that doesn’t mean it won’t play well with your favorite colors. Orange, yellow, green and red all get along famously with pink. Crushing but not head over heels? Pick up a pink lipstick or blush — you’ll adore the rosy glow it gives your complexion.
What to Wear: 1. Matty M Colorblock Dress 2. Calvin Klein Denim Leggings 3. MICHAEL Michael Kors Beaded Top 4. MAC Lipstick in Lustering
