Fierce in Floral Denim

It’s spring and flowers aren’t just popping up in gardens. They’re also adding flirty fun to denim jeans and shorts, making them the season’s hottest trend.

Here are a few tips for stepping out in stylish floral-print denim (from left to right):

Texture: Gardens always have variety in shapes and colors, but don’t forget about texture. Top these Miss Me botanical garden skinny jeans with this lace camisole tank or this lace butterfly top to add depth.

Pop of Color:  A multi-colored floral print is easy to pair with a solid top. You can keep it cool with a pastel shade or add pop with something more electric. Either of these cold-shoulder tops from Copper Key are perfect choices for these jeans from Jessica Simpson Jeanswear.

Pattern Play: Don’t be afraid to add other patterns and prints. This Moa Moa chevron-print top in peach and white adds a breezy island effect to these Celebrity Pink floral shorts.

Dillard’s Exclusive Interview with Joe’s Jeans Founder & Creative Director Joe Dahan

A legend in the modern fashion world, Joe Dahan launched Joe’s Jeans in 2001. His innovative designs pioneered the idea of body-specific fits. He remains the creative director for the company, responsible for the design, development and marketing of the brand.

Learn more about the man and his famous denim line.

Q: Who is the Joe’s Jeans woman?
A: The Joe’s woman cannot be defined or placed into an individual genre. She embodies a casual chic lifestyle, but her personality does not fit into one specific mold.

Q: Where do you draw most of your inspiration from?
A: Among other things our collection is inspired by our surroundings — the places we go, someone we spot on the street, a friend or maybe even a blogger with a unique sense of style.

Q: Who or what are your major influences?
A: Art in any form whether it be music or architecture — it provides inspiration for our various collections each season.

Q: What do you feel you bring to the industry?
A: Since we started we have been known as the go-to brand for body-specific fits. Even today we are constantly developing new fits and silhouettes and working with innovative fabrics, washes and techniques to ensure we are continually bringing our customers not only the best fits but also our take on the latest fashion trends.

Q: What is your favorite step in the design process?
A: I love being hands-on and working on a variety of projects from designing the next collection to looking at the design of a new retail store to brainstorming on the next ad campaign. No two seasons are the same. The natural momentum and evolution of the creative process keeps me intrigued.

Q: Did you attend school for clothing design or are you self-taught?
A: Self-taught. I started in the business very young.

Q: How did you decide you wanted to design denim?
A: I started Joe’s in 2001. At the time, there weren’t any premium denim brands in the market and my vision was to create a line that would bridge the gap between fashion and denim.

Q: How do you choose your colors for a season?
A: It starts with our overall inspiration for the season — not just in terms of color palettes, bodies and fabrics but what we see here in L.A. and on our trips. Music, art and street style are big influences.

Q: The Joe’s Jeans pocket stitch is iconic. How did you end up with that design?
A: Our pocket design is very minimalistic — we’ve named it the Moon Eclipse. We use our signature tiny needle arch along with a Joe’s logo.

Q: What’s the ultimate message you want to get across through your designs?
A: We believe the most important aspect of our designs is that women wearing them feel comfortable, confident and sexy. Even a little more daring and provocative, if you will.

Q: Which pair of jeans should no woman be without?
A: The Skinny Jean.  The iconic skinny is definitely not a trend — it is a wardrobe staple that is here to stay.

Kids: Fall Dress Code

With the new school year in full swing and temperatures dropping, it’s time to think of fall fashion. We have good news, your child doesn’t have to sacrifice style for functionality when it gets chilly.

Girls
The mod squad girl will love this Zunie drop-waist dress with cute Copper Key leggings for added warmth and a cosmopolitan layered look. For a little bedazzled bling she’ll love this beaded burnout tee and embellished jeans from Miss Me Girls. Fall is also a good time to play with patterns.  Leopard print adds flair to this V-neck top and denim/chiffon skirt from Takara. Black or brick red leggings from 2 Hip by Wrapper are great for adding another layer under the skirt.

Boys
Your school-age guy will be stylish in stripes with a bit of urban edge in this T-shirt and jeans from Ecko. Bold color is not just for the girls. Guys will get noticed in this neon tee from Hurley. The shirt pairs perfectly with these Hurley jeans. Add this long-sleeve tee from Nike for a cool layered look and added warmth or wear it alone with jeans.

Word of the Week: Oxford shirt

Oxford shirt   [n.] \ˈäks-fərd\ a soft durable cotton or synthetic fabric made in plain or basket weaves and sometimes referred to as oxford cloth.

Most guys don’t know that an oxford shirt refers to the fabric of the shirt not the style. If you didn’t know, don’t sweat it. All you need to know is that these Cremieux oxford sportshirts are great for adding casual style to your wardrobe and that the oxford fabrication makes them comfortable and soft.

We love this checked Cremieux oxford sportshirt untucked with these Cremieux relaxed-fit vintage  jeans.  Pair the light blue shirt with dark denim and the rich purple shirt with light-wash jeans. Add a vest or blazer to dress up either look.

For a casual yet preppy day at work pair this striped Cremieux oxford sportshirt with these Cremieux Provence summer flat-front pants. For a more traditional casual look that’s well-suited for work, put one of these solid Cremieux oxford sportshirts with Cremieux travel smart dress pants.

What Every Man Needs in His Closet

Once I became an official blogger for the Dressing Room, I was asked to contribute a photo and answer a few questions for the blog contributors page. One was “What should every man have in his closet?” My answer is/was: 1 pair black slacks; 1 pair black dress shoes; 1 pair cool jeans; 1 pair cool casual shoes; 1 dress shirt and tie combination to go with slacks; 1 sportshirt and 1 polo shirt that can go with slacks or jeans and 1 stylish T-shirt to go with jeans.

Here are my picks from Dillards.com and how I’d wear them.

For Work
These Cremieux dress pants go great with this classic white dress shirt from Roundtree & Yorke Gold Label. Dress this look up even more with this Murano time stripe tie. A vest is a versatile bonus item. Pair this one from Perry Ellis with the shirt/tie/slacks combination for another work-ready look. Remove the tie and you’ll have 4 work looks just from these pieces. Toss this Perry Ellis sportcoat in the mix for even more diversity.

Dressy Casual
When you want a stylish casual look, pair the vest, dress shirt and tie with these Levi’s 505 jeans. This look works for a lot of offices and is also great for a dinner date or night out. You can also wear the slacks with this Murano sportshirt or with denim and chinos.

Weekend
Jeans or these Polo Ralph Lauren vintage chinos also go great with polo shirts and T-shirts (I like the vintage vibe of these Junk Food tees) for a laid-back look.

Shoes
Leave the gym shoes for the gym fellas. These Windsor Dress Oxfords from Ecco and these Rockport casual Oxfords work with most of these looks. I love my sandals and flip flops on the weekend, but those aren’t essentials.

Accessories
Wrap up your essentials collection with a belt and watch. This reversible belt from Polo Ralph Lauren matches each pair of shoes and this Michael Kors watch is perfect for everyday wear.

And just so you know, my closet is stocked with a version of each of these items. In my photo on the contributors page I’m wearing a Cremieux polo shirt and Roundtree & Yorke slacks for a casual Friday look.

An American Classic: Men’s Levi’s Jeans

There are few things in men’s fashion that are as well-known as Levi’s denim. After all, the 501® cut is credited with starting America’s love affair with jeans.

Levi’s continues to be at the forefront of men’s denim. Their jeans come in a variety of colors, lengths and silhouettes. With so many choices, Levi’s has a fit finder to help you make sure you find the Levi’s you are looking for.

Want the ultimate skinny fit? Want a slim fit that sits at the waist and has a bootcut leg? Or a relaxed fit with straight legs? The Levi’s men’s fit finder will help you find the perfect pair of denim jeans, whether the iconic Levi’s 501® or the more relaxed Levi’s 569® Loose Straight.

Using the Men’s fit finder is easy, just go to the Levi’s Men’s Fit Finder and drag the red tab over the different Levi’s fits (skinny, slim, straight, taper or relaxed) at the top of the chart. A summary of the fit will appear over the photo. Click the “Shop This Fit” link to see all of the jeans available at Dillard’s.com that meet your criteria.

Simple, isn’t it? We love the finder because it takes the guess work out of shopping for a great pair of jeans.

Men: Dress Up or Down in Linen

Linen and linen blends are familiar fibers for warmer weather and bring to mind soft, breathable fabrics. But did you know that linen can create many versatile looks? More than just a sportshirt material, linen is used to create suits and pants appropriate for warmer climes.

For a look that’s perfect at the office or for a special occasion, try this combination from Perry Ellis. Everything is coordinated for you — from a Perry Ellis jacket, vest, sportshirt and pants to a pair of Hush Puppies oxfords.

This same Perry Ellis jacket can be worn with a V-neck tee, linen jeans and Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes for a more casual look.

As the temperatures  climb, you may find you prefer to wear cool, crisp white clothing like these separates from Perry Ellis.

Combine some of these same elements with a Cremieux fedora hat and Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes to create a fun, casual vacation or weekend approach.

Not Your Dad’s Jeans

The skinny jean — everything from a straight leg fit to the slimmest of silhouettes — is back this season with a vengeance. Not your dad’s jeans, this denim phenomenon maximizes your wardrobe with their grab-and-go versatility. For year-round wear, pair them with a sweatergraphic teesportshirt or hoodie shirt. To polish the look, top them with a great blazer or denim, leather or faux-leather jacket.

If you are new to skinny jeans, you might want to start out with a more relaxed pair like these Grayson straight-leg jeans from Silver Jeans. With a looser fit and flat front, these are a great pair to begin building your skinny jean collection.

If you are ready to try out skinny jeans with embellished pockets, these Union straight-leg jeans from Big Star are a great choice. They combine frayed piecing, a dark wash and stitched back pockets for an updated, yet classic look.

The Evan from Buffalo is a super-slim jean with an already-worn look. A washed effect and a super-slim silhouette give these jeans an edgy attitude. Wear them anywhere that casual is in.

For the ultimate in skinny jeans, you’ll need a pair of Levi’s 510™ Super Skinny jeans. This slimmest of slim jeans sits below the waist, then gets extra narrow through the leg all the way to the ankle. Spandex adds stretch for a comfortable fit.

Go here to check out all of our Young Men’s denim and denim brands.
