Q. What trends in houseware/glassware are you seeing for summer?
A. Casual, casual, casual. With the growth of at-home entertaining and outdoor kitchens, the demand for casual dinner and drinkware continues to grow. Hydration is a huge part of the growing demand; everything from BPA free water bottles to patterned straw tumblers continue to be hot items. Dillard’s offers an array of straw tumblers in fun patterns.
Q. Describe the process for selecting a Summer theme.
A. We like to select locations that are very cultural, so that we can develop the collection inspired by things that are indigenous of that country. This year, we selected Indonesia due to all of the beautiful tropical landscapes and the paisley & floral inspired décor and textiles that are found there. Once we decide on a location, we begin working on a pattern that incorporates a feel of the location, but is also relatable and on trend.
Q. Describe the Bali Hai collection in three words or less.
A. Fresh, vibrant and versatile.
Q. What aspects or features of Bali Hai are you most excited about?
A. This year, we brought back melamine and acrylic to Dillard’s. We carefully selected heavy gauge melamine dinner plates, embossed heavy gauge floral salad plates, and embossed heavy acrylic drinkware to offer our customers quality and durability. I absolutely LOVE the acrylic drinkware. The embossed pattern has an antique pressed glass, vintage feel, but the colors are so fresh. I love the idea of mixing and matching all of the dinnerware and drinkware.
Q. What are the key colors this year?
A. Lime green, orange, purple, fuchsia and turquoise.
Q. How did you come up with the “Bali Hai” name?
A. Bali Hai was the theme song in the 1958 movie South Pacific. Since this collection is very playful we thought it would be appropriate to give it a catchy name.
Q. Know any phrases in Balinese?
A. Ohm Swas-ti-as-too. That means “hello” in Balinese.
Q. What’s the ultimate message you want to get across through Bali Hai?
A. Don’t be afraid of melamine and acrylic. You can update or even layer in pieces of melamine to your current dinnerware and use it every day. Same with the acrylic drinkware; the goblets can be used as an all purpose, every day style. Bali Hai is such a fun, vibrant collection and I feel that our customers can be very creative with it. Mixing and matching with this group is easy because the colors and patterns coordinate so well. Customers can create their own Balinese escape with our Bali Hai Collection!
