We recently visited with Sanctuary Clothing designer Debra Polanco to learn more about one of our favorite contemporary brands. She shared her inspirations, designs and love of fashion.
Q: Who is the Sanctuary woman?
A: She is modern and timeless, a 24/7 girl-on-the-go who loves quality with a fashion twist.
Q: Where do you draw most of your inspiration for the line?
A: On a daily basis, everywhere I go. The streets are a great place to watch emerging trends, and of course vintage pieces are a constant source of inspiration.
Q: Were you inspired by vintage pieces when designing the touches of embroidery on the Luisa dress and the tassel-tie finishes on the Jacinda blouse?
A: Definitely, the inspiration I derive from vintage pieces almost always shows itself in the details. When designing the Luisa dress and Jacinda blouse, I was envisioning a tropical paradise like Ibiza or Sao Paolo, where the Sanctuary girl would have her feet in the sand while planning her adventure for the day. It’s almost about the items being effortless yet fashionable.
Q: What are some of your favorite pieces in the line?
A: Coming this fall, I’m really excited for the Amazon Printed Charmer. It will sexy-up any outfit! Also, I always love anything with a collar or cuff, like the Empire State blouse hitting the site in July. It’s a great transitional piece from summer to fall.
Q: It is so exciting to see the line evolve with fashion, what are some key trends we will see from your line next season?
A: Lots of pattern play — mixed prints — and embellishment. Novelty or printed bottoms are also a must! I am super excited about the introduction of Vegan Leather to the line. Just like the name implies, this is our version of a friendlier leather. You will see it for yourself in pieces like the Vegan Leather Shift dress coming in August.
Q: We cannot wait to see what’s to come! Can you leave us with the ultimate message you want the Sanctuary woman to experience through your designs?
A: You can feel confident knowing you are fashionable and ready to travel through your day with style!
