Fit Tips: How to Find Your Perfect Swimsuit

Have questions about swimsuit shopping? We crowd sourced our creative team for their most puzzling pool-wear quandaries. Check out the resulting swimsuit FAQ for expert tips on fit and styling.

Q: Can I add volume to my chest without resorting to push-up cups?

SwimImage1
A: Don’t be so quick to dismiss push-up styles. Modern push-up cups are soft and subtle for a natural appearance. Plus, many styles are offset with feminine accents, so you can rest assured you won’t look like you’re swimming in your bra.

But if you’re still not sold, try two of our favorite new trends: handkerchief and fringe bikini tops. Both styles are flattering and free-spirited, creating the illusion of a larger chest while balancing the overall shape of your figure.

Q: Do I have to stick with solids to look my slimmest?

SwimImage2 A: Of course not! Just remember, small-scale prints minimize while large-scale prints emphasize. Mixing and matching different patterns and solids lets you spotlight your best assets. For example, pairing a boldy printed bikini or tankini top with a solid bottom is a simple, chic way to keep the focus on your upper body.

Q: Any tips for finding tummy-taming suits that aren’t constricting?

SwimImage3
A: We’re loving this season’s peasant-inspired tankini tops. They’re fitted through the bust but softly skim your midsection for a slimming illusion. Blouson tops – which feature loose bodies with banded hems – keep you covered and feeling confident even when you’re in the water.

Spanx and Magicsuit swimsuits are also great options. Both lines offer comfortable control designs that couple light compression with flattering accents (like draping, shirring and tiers) for a slimmed-down look in seconds.

Shop the Suits: Athena Pick Your Fit Mandalay Bandini Top,  Kenneth Cole Reaction True Love Tankini Top, Spanx Riveting Ruching One-Piece Swimsuit

Q: I’m young but not confident about my rear and upper thighs. How do I hide my problem areas and still look my age?

SwimImage4
A: Skirted bikini bottoms and swimdresses not only conceal your lower body, but also make a feminine statement. In fact, we find many skirted suits flirtier than traditional bikinis. Look for skirts with ruffled or pleated hems to achieve that coveted balance of coverage and youth.

Another way to minimize thighs and hips? Put the emphasis on your upper body. Think ruffled bandeau tops, shoulder-accentuating halter tops, or striped tops paired with solid bottoms. Basically, anything that draws the eye up.

Shop the Suits: Betsey Johnson Beauty Mark Floral-Print Swimdress, Kenneth Cole New York Haute Wave Bandeau Top & Skirted Bottom, Eco Swim Galaxy Ruffle Bandeau Top & Hipster Bottom

Q: How do I choose a suit that complements my skin tone?

SwimImage5
A: Finding a swimsuit that complements your complexion is just like shopping for a dress or top. If you always feel good in purple, take some purple suits into the dressing room. And though black is a traditionally slimming choice, avoid it in favor of other dark shades (navy, plum, olive) if you typically look washed out in it.

To fake a tan, turn to warm shades such as coral, orange, red and neon. These hot hues not only bring a bronze glow to pale complexions, but also enhance darker skin tones.

Q: I want a coverup that provides coverage but is still sexy. Any suggestions?

SwimImage6
A: Coverups are key to pulling together a glam pool or beach look. While caftans are a classic choice, we’re smitten with this season’s crochet styles. They provide crucial coverage but also reveal playful hints of skin – the best of both worlds.

If you’re trying to pack lightly for vacation, go with a maxi dress. The multitasking silhouette pairs with flip-flops for the beach and wedge sandals for dinner.

Spring Sneak Peek: Chambray Shirts

Soft, durable and versatile, chambray is one of our favorite borrowed-from-the-boys fabrics. Inspired by vintage U.S. Navy workshirts, chambray is here to stay.

Not to be confused with denim, chambray is a softer, lighter-weight choice with an authentic faded and sun-kissed look. The ultimate season-spanning fabric, these qualities make it easy to pair with a variety of colors and styles.

Statement Handbags: Have Fun & Turn Heads!

There’s no need to start fall with styles that blend into the background. Punch up your wardrobe with a bag that draws second looks and starts conversations. We’ve picked the best ways to play with your handbag wardrobe this season.

Unique Details: This zip over satchel from Kathy Van Zeeland stands out from the crowd with whimsical zipper details and a silver giraffe print. With its intricate decorative beading and peacock feather motif, this Nina Mae Fully Beaded Peacock clutch combines upscale and quirky. The T Tahari Olivia tote steps up a simple shape with distinctive colorblocking and the curved lines of the front pocket.

Rich Colors: Betsey Johnson knows a thing or two about making statements, and her Neon Lights Jelly satchel says it all with a vibrant neon green. Brilliant scarlet dials up the drama for this Indio leather bucket from The Sak. On the other end of the color spectrum, bold blue hues take this BCBGMAXAZRIA Evening clutch from staple to stunner.

Fresh Silhouettes: We love the rounded shape and vertical front zipper pockets of the Vince Camuto Cristina hobo and the asymmetrical front flap of the Hobo Original Zara cross-body bag. The vegetable tanned Cavo tote from Patricia Nash is dressed up with delightfully unexpected cutouts and ruffles along the top edge for a fresh take on a classic.

Touchable Textures: What some designs use as a decoration, the Steve Madden Fringy Fringe hobo uses as a centerpiece. An unexpected panel of hair calf invites touch and adds an unexpected edge to the Brahmin Kensington Collection Taylor tote (and it’s only available at Dillard’s)! For turning heads and starting conversations, though, nothing beats the owlishly offbeat UGG Australia Foxley Flap shoulder bag, with its over-the-top textures, chain strap and antiqued brasstone hardware.

Edgy Vs. Sweet: 2 Ways to Wear Leather

From subtle trim on a jacket to second-skin leggings, leather is a luxurious and versatile fall trend. We pulled some of our favorite leather and faux-leather designs and styled them two different ways — first edgy and then sweet. Simply choose the statement that suits your personal aesthetic best. Or, mix elements from both for unexpected contrast.

The Legging

Edgy: Create a tough look that’s also figure-friendly by focusing on sharp lines and smart proportions. Balance skinny tux-stripe leggings with a tailored tailcoat jacket. It not only provides back coverage, but also draws the eye upward with bold color. A lace top and leopard-print pump add femme fatale texture, while geometric-inspired accessories complete the razor-sharp statement.
Sweet: Take the dress-over-tights combo to the next level with faux-leather-stripe leggings instead of expected opaques. A feminine dress, preferably with a fluttery hem, keeps the coupling light and flattering. Finish with a cutout wedge, classic satchel and bling ring.

The Dress

Sweet: When composing a feminine leather look you can wear to work, consider the 3 P’s: polished, powerful and pretty.  Faux-leather panels cut into an ivory sheath for a curve-contouring effect. An exotic satchel, cap-toe pump and tailored hoop earring speak to classic sensibilities.
Edgy: Nothing pairs better with leather than leather — especially in contrasting colors and textures. We styled a brown leather dress and classic black jacket with a black moto boot to take the rule-breaking motif from head to toe. Add a buttery cross-body bag (in yet another shade of leather) and a swipe of red lipstick for bad-girl beauty.

The Top

Edgy: Don’t just borrow from the boys — borrow from the  best-dressed boys. Made-over menswear pieces, like a tuxedo-inspired top, slim-fit tailored pant and metallic-toe smoking loafer, strike a balance between tough and glam. Metallic accessories in varying shades of gold make the transition from desk to drinks almost too easy.
Sweet: Take a black leather top from all-out edgy to playfully feminine with a mix of whimsical and witty accessories. Think bows, polka dots, pearls and unabashedly girly shades of pink.
