Dillard’s Exclusive Interview with Joyce Azria, Creative Director of BCBGeneration

Q: Who is the typical BCBGeneration woman?
A: The typical BCBGeneration customer is someone who wants to be on trend but still timeless. She is casual in her daily aesthetic but loves a good party dress.

Q: Where do you draw most of your inspiration for your designs?
A: Street style is always somewhere I look for inspiration. A girl with a good blog gives visual insights into how she lives her life and always sets the trends for me.

Q: Who are your major influences?
A: My influences are always changing, but any girl with strong art influences is always on my radar.

Q: What do you feel you bring to the industry?
A: Heart plus life-long experience. BCBG is a family business and Generation is a major artery of this beating heart.  Our family business gives our customer the quality she loves us for and is fresh and fun.

Q: What’s the ultimate message you want to get across through your shoes?
A: The Generation girl loves to be on trend, and a great shoe is the perfect way to make this statement. Beyond styling, a good shoe should also make you feel empowered. Generation shoes will provide the sole to your confidence!

Q: Did you attend school for design or are you self-taught?
A: I have worked around fashion my whole life!  My father was constantly inviting us to be a part of the design process, asking our opinions and keeping us involved.  Although I didn’t attend a college, I think almost two decades of hands-on experience has guided me to where I am now.  My Dad always called our experiences at BCBG the “school of life.”

Q: What’s your favorite shoe in the line?
A: This season is all about the bootie and Viktory wedge booties will be the perfect complement to any fall wardrobe.

Q: What are some key trends we will see from your line next season?
A: The spring season is all about cutouts and new hardware elements. While a good wedge is always in style, flats are back and will make a BIG statement for spring. Keep a lookout for rougher details that tie back perfectly to our feminine clothes. There will be a lot of spiked hardware mixed with stacked platforms for the unexpected combination of pretty and punk.

Q: Tell us about a shoe you will never forget.
A: My Dad took me to a vintage store called Remix on Beverly Blvd and bought me my first pair of “big girl” heels.  They were dark ivory leather shoes from the ’60s with the most amazing stacked wooden heels.  I wore them for years!

Q: Which shoe should no woman be without?
A: A great loafer is always a must in either navy or black.  So relaxed and cool with a dress or edgy and retro with daytime looks.

Word of the Week: Shift Dress

Dresses are a perennial fashion favorite, but this season’s standout silhouette is the shift dress. Looser than traditional sheath dresses and less flared than A-line styles, the shift complements your shoulders and forgives through the stomach and hips. It’s an ideal option if you’re looking to show off your legs — or a new pair of shoes.

  1. Gianni Bini Satsi One-Shoulder Shift Dress: A sultry one-shoulder neckline dresses up this evening-ready rendition of the shift dress. We love the rosy glow the deep pink color lends to your cheeks.
  2. BCBGeneration Dot-Print Shift Dress: This classic shift fit is a great go-to on busy days. Simply add opaque tights, boots and your favorite jewelry — the playful polka-dot print makes the statement for you.
  3. Chelsea & Violet Snake-Print Shift Dress: It’s official — snake print is a neutral. Take advantage of this style’s versatility by mixing and matching with rich shades of burgundy, forest green or cobalt blue. Sheer sleeves lend romance to the otherwise edgy silhouette.
  4. Antonio Melani Ace Faux-Leather Piping Shift Dress: This dress delivers the best of both worlds: faux-leather piping creates the appearance of a contoured waist without hugging your body.  The inch-eliminating illusion continues to the hip for an hourglass effect.
  5. Plenty! by Tracy Reese Printed Pocket Shift Dress: Though first worn in the 1920s, the shift experienced a revival during the ’60s. This silhouette speaks to the design’s mod-era popularity with a geometric print and youthful hip pockets.

Rush Week: What to Wear

Planning Rush Week looks can be a daunting task. Our top tip? Choose clothes and accessories that you not only feel comfortable in, but also speak to your unique personality. We broke down the sorority recruitment process by day (though schedules vary by university) so you can impress stress-free.

Comfort is key on your first day as you’ll be walking from house to house. Pair your school-issued tee with tailored shorts, cropped pants or a preppy skirt. (We picked a pink pant that’s playful yet polished.) Your secret weapon on this busy day? Blotting tissues. They’ll ensure you’re fresh-faced and oil-free from the first house to the last.
Shop Our Picks: Sanctuary Clothing Cropped Pants, Michael Kors Watch, Bobbi Brown Blotting Tissues, Michael Kors Earrings, Sam Edelman Sandals

Take things up a notch with a sundress. Look to feminine styles with prints or textures to subtly set your look apart. If you still have several houses to visit, opt for a shimmery yet smart flat. When you get down to the final tours, lift your look with a pump or wedge. We chose a bejeweled wedge that catches the sunlight with every step. A cheerful nail polish —  we especially love this coral shade — is a constant reminder that this week is all about having fun and finding your place.
Shop Our Picks: M.S.S.P. Printed Dress, Gianni Bini Wedge, Michael Kors Bracelet, Guerlain Emilio Pucci Nail Lacquer, Anna & Ava Necklace, Vince Camuto Metallic Flat, Gianni Bini Lace Dress

Stand out from the crowd of black dresses with a saturated jewel tone. On-trend details, like one-shoulder necklines and peplums, create a sharp look that also complements your figure. Don’t go too heavy with your accessories. Instead, select one or two statement pieces that truly shine.
Shop Our Picks: Gianni Bini Pump, R.J. Graziano Earrings, R.J. Graziano Bracelets, Gianni Bini Peplum Dress

Keep it fun and simple on this special day. Since you’ll be running to meet your new sisters, slip into the flat sandal you wore on your first day. Wear a lightweight, fitted camisole or top you can layer under the T-shirt your house will give you. There will be plenty of photographs to commemorate the day — so don’t forget your lip gloss for flawless shots.
Shop Our Picks: Gianni Bini Shorts, C&C California Tank, Sam Edelman Sandal, BCBGeneration Sweet Bracelet, Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss, Lilly Pulitzer Sorority iPhone Case
