Wild Idea: Refresh Your Wardrobe with Animal Prints

Prints are an important part of a well-balanced wardrobe — but do you find yourself reaching for the same patterns again and again? Shake things up with animal prints. We matched classic patterns with their safari-style equivalents, so you can find the animal print that works best with the rest of your clothes.

Why it Works: Sultry, retro and chic — polka dots and leopard spots share a similar sense of style. Contrast colors compose both prints. Translation: If polka dots play well with your wardrobe, so will leopard print.
What to Wear: We like to think of leopard as a neutral and especially love statement pieces, like this Cremieux short, Calvin Klein dress and Vince Camuto top. But if you’re still uncertain about opting for spots, start small with a fierce shoe or handbag.

Why it Works: We know how it goes: you buy one striped top, and suddenly, your closet is full of them. Switch up your seafaring vibe with safari-inspired zebra print. The stylized stripes deliver the same striking look, plus a little extra attitude.
What to Wear: Like classic stripes, zebra works best on a tee or dress. These Vince Camuto, Kensie and Laura Max designs all feature unexpected pops of color.

Sharon Young: Dillard’s Exclusive Interview

Q: Did you attend school for fashion design or are you self-taught?
A: I did not have formal design training. As a child I was influenced by growing up around my parents’ fabric store. There I learned sewing and all about fabrications. I began my design career making novelty detachable collars to be worn on sweaters and dresses. My small collar business eventually developed into a sportswear business. I am proudly self-taught!

Q: Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?
A: I am inspired by combinations of color found in art, home décor, architecture and the beauty found in nature. My background in art and fabrics always draws me toward beautiful prints and novelty textiles.

Q: Who are your major influences?
A: From the earliest days of my career, I have always admired the luxurious fabrics and classic designs of Ralph Lauren, both in fashion and home decor.

Q: Who is the Sharon Young woman?
A: She likes comfortable, stylish and sophisticated clothing unique to her lifestyle. She loves how she feels in a great novelty jacket or embellished top and wants to look her best at all times.

Q: What’s the ultimate message you want to communicate through your designs?
A: Ultimately, style and color should represent your own personality. What you wear is a reflection of you. Be the best that you can be in style, fashion and manner.

Q: What makes your line different?
A: I bring to the industry age-appropriate silhouettes in beautiful fabrics that tastefully address the trends of the season.

Q: What are some of your favorite pieces and/or prints in the line?
A: I love the addition of sportswear dresses into my collections. I am also pleased to have added a variety of novelty tops which addresses the casual but sophisticated lifestyle of the Sharon Young customer. Animal prints are my signature and can be found in a variety of expected and unexpected interpretations.

Fashion Files experts Annemarie and Alexandra Dillard are inspired by everything from runway shows to sidewalk styles. They’ve used their style savvy to pick some of their favorite looks for this holiday party season.

Here are some of their top trends:
