Q: So how did you go from being the founding Design Director for the Sean “Diddy” Combs line to designing Yummie by Heather Thomson?
A: I decided to launch Yummie Tummie after giving birth to my children. Struggling to get my body back post-baby, I went to the shapewear department looking to boost my confidence; but I was disappointed with my choices. It was as if the shapewear department had been frozen in time. These literally were my grandmothers girdles. And as a designer, I was perplexed. The products I saw (and yes tried!) failed me both aesthetically and functionally, and it was in this fog of uncomfortable and antiquated shapewear that I had a moment of clarity. And with it, I dusted off my sewing machine, sat at my dining room table and sewed the first, and what would become, The Original Yummie Tummie 3-panel shaping tank that I proudly hold 10 patents on today.
Q: What inspires you when designing Yummie Tummie shapewear?
A: Designing Yummie Tummie shapewear started as a selfish initiative. I assumed other women need it too. I really turn to myself for inspiration, and how I change and evolve. My needs as a woman evolve and with that comes the inspiration for new products and ideas every season.
Q: What do you think your product says to women?
A: Be comfortable in your own skin with a yummie boost of confidence. Enjoy life! We want women to love themselves and to be themselves – feeling sexy, happy and secure!
Q: What makes Yummie Tummie panties different from other shapewear?
A: We do what other brands don’t. Fashion and function live harmoniously in Yummie Tummie. It’s shapewear that you want to wear. Yummie Tummie is beautiful, comfortable, flattering and feel good. Q: What are your favorite ways to wear these shapers?
A: I wear Yummie Tummie as everyday apparel. Shapewear shouldn’t have to hide under other garments or be a dirty little secret.
Q: Can you give us your top shaping tips?
- Embrace your flaws as much as your features. You are a full package, and no one sees just one part. If you can’t embrace what you consider to be your flaws, then you have to work to change them and not rely solely on an underpinning to do all the work.
- Use Yummie Tummie as you would your foundation pieces. I wear one every day. You need the right foundation for every outfit. You need to care what you look like. My dad always said “leave the house like you’re going to meet the president.” Whether it’s your bra, your panties or the proper Yummie Tummie – the right foundations help you build the right outfit. And if you feel put together underneath, you are going to present a confident and together front.
Q: And we just have to ask, what is your favorite part of being a Real Housewife of New York?
A: It’s really been such a fun experience. I love meeting the fans from the show, even when I’m just walking down the street. It’s a lot of fun and often touching, because it’s also been very rewarding. The show has allowed me to spread awareness about my favorite causes. For instance, the amount of people telling me that they have signed up to become an organ donor after hearing about my family’s story is overwhelming. The awareness that I’m able to bring to organ donation has been amazing and very exciting.
