Men: Dress Up or Down in Linen

Linen and linen blends are familiar fibers for warmer weather and bring to mind soft, breathable fabrics. But did you know that linen can create many versatile looks? More than just a sportshirt material, linen is used to create suits and pants appropriate for warmer climes.

For a look that’s perfect at the office or for a special occasion, try this combination from Perry Ellis. Everything is coordinated for you — from a Perry Ellis jacket, vest, sportshirt and pants to a pair of Hush Puppies oxfords.

This same Perry Ellis jacket can be worn with a V-neck tee, linen jeans and Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes for a more casual look.

As the temperatures  climb, you may find you prefer to wear cool, crisp white clothing like these separates from Perry Ellis.

Combine some of these same elements with a Cremieux fedora hat and Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes to create a fun, casual vacation or weekend approach.

Pretty Pales: How to Wear Neutral Colors

New to the neutral trend? Here are three easy ways to wear spring’s most serene shades.

  1. Texture Message: Lend dimension to your neutral of choice by combining tonal textures and prints. For this Cremieux look, our stylist mixed soft stripes with ladylike lace for an effect that’s as clever as it is fresh.
  2. Electric Shock: They may seem like an odd couple, but neutrals love neon. This Vince Camuto look offers an updated take on spring suiting, popping key lime green against crisp white.

The Edge: Our Contemporary Buyer’s Spring Picks

To say our women’s contemporary buyer is busy would be an understatement. After all, she’s charged with finding the latest and greatest before anyone else. We managed to catch up with Megan (between meetings at market no less) to talk about The Edge Shop, spring’s essential styles and her love of bold color.

Shop the Picks: 1. Greylin Palmer Tassel Belt Dress 2. Sanctuary Clothing Rosewater Floral Blouse & Catcher Shorts 3. Gianni Bini Madeleine Sweater & Annette Skirt 4. MM Couture by Miss Me One-Shoulder Dress 5. BCBGMAXAZRIA Abee Pleated Gown

Q: What is The Edge: Contemporary Shop? What makes it different?
A: It’s the department where you’ll find on-trend looks for work and play and everything in between. The Edge features premium denim lines like Joe’s Jeans and Rich & Skinny, modern collections like French Connection and Sanctuary, and great tops and dresses from brands like MM Couture and Aryn K.

Q: How would you describe the contemporary point of view in three words?
A: Forward, confident, fearless — and fun and independent. Do I have to choose just three? Contemporary is a mindset, not an age.

Q: What lines or designers are you most excited about this spring?
A: Kensie looks great this season. Their color palette is current but has a unique twist. Sanctuary, French Connection, Chelsea & Violet and Gianni Bini all have fantastic spring lineups. And I can’t get enough of Rich & Skinny’s colored denim.

Q: So what are you wearing to your market appointments this week?
A: I’m excited for spring dresses and styling, but March weather can still be chilly. I’m relying on statement blazers and jackets that I can quickly toss on or take off. Another go-to pairing is my foam green Rich & Skinny cropped jeans with the white French Connection Cass blazer. It’s a really fresh, clean look.

Q: What will you be wearing this spring and summer?
A: Lots of dresses, hi-low hems, lace details, colored denim and maxi dresses.

Q: If you had to choose one spring statement, what would it be?
A: Bold color: colorblocking, bright denim, saturated blouses, bright floral, geo prints, even lace. Have you seen all the colors the BCBGMAXAZRIA knit power skirt is available in? I’m even excited for bright colors in swim — Gianni Bini has some vibrant swimsuits that are easy to mix and match.

Q: What emerging designers do we need to look out for?
A: I’m really loving Greylin — their flirty dresses have a cool edge that miraculously works for everyone. Jill Jill Stuart has beautiful dresses that are also versatile and appropriate for many different occasions. C&C California has perfect knits (really, you have to touch them!) that come in a range of modern silhouttes. Also check out Patterson J. Kincaid for cool pieces with surprising details, like long fringe ties on a silky blouse or metallic sheen on a pleated maxi dress.

Shoes: Solutions for Size, Slipping, Blisters & More

Between sizes in the season’s must-have shoe? Battling blisters from your new flats? Us too — until we discovered Foot Petals. Our favorite shoe accessory line offers a wide variety of foot-friendly solutions. We created a quick guide to their products, sorted by issue so you can find what you need fast.

Aching Arches, Foot Fatigue

If you have flat arches or spend long days on your feet, Foot Petals Amazing Arches are your new best friend. These contoured pads create a virtual arch for flat feet or offer extra support to your natural arch. The added lift actually improves the fit of your shoes. Amazing Arches cushions even work with your body, absorbing shock and reducing the achy feeling that comes with spending hours on your feet.

Calluses, Fatigue, Sliding in Heels

We love sky-high heels, but our feet aren’t big fans. Luckily, Foot Petals Tip Toes pads infinitely improve the experience. The cushioned design protects bones and tissues, prevents calluses and offers shock absorption. Tip Toes also help with fit, keeping your feet from sliding forward and eliminating uncomfortable and unsightly toe scrunch and overhang.

Blisters, Heel Slipping

It’s your worst nightmare: unbearable blisters before the day has even begun. Wake up and get some Heavenly Heels. Simply stick the self-adhering pads to the back of your shoes’ heels to prevent blisters. Between sizes? Heavenly Heelz cushions add just enough volume and comfortable “stick” to stop heel slipping. Try putting them inside the tops of mules or boots to ease rubbing.

Strap Digging & Slipping

Spring is the season of strappy sandals. Keep your favorite styles from cutting into your feet with Strappy Strips. Thin and easy to cut to size, these padded strips are virtually invisible. They also add comfortable “stick,” which keeps your slingback straps from sliding down. Our favorite tip? Line thong sandal straps for rub-free walking.

Sliding, Fatigue, Moisture

Foot Petals Killer Kushionz insoles transform the fit of your shoes, from heel to toe. This multitasking design offers a high degree of shock absorption, stops feet from sliding forward and controls moisture. You can even stick them in open-toe styles and flats. They’re your best bet if you’re looking to improve the overall comfort of your shoes.

Home Cooking with Le Creuset

Nathan Lyon's Ribollita

There’s a reason we love enameled cast-iron cookware from French maker Le Creuset. Make that a lot of reasons. They’re colorful, heavy-duty and extremely versatile, able to cook a virtually endless amount of recipes: everything from rice to braised pork to mouth-watering desserts. Cast-iron cookware, such as Le Creuset’s skillets and French ovens, is a superb conductor of heat, making it ideal for slow cooking. When heated, the enamel-coated cast iron draws flavor out of the ingredients better than just about any other cookware type, making meats taste more succulent and vegetables more flavorful. Le Creuset also makes enameled stoneware and stainless steel cookware, as well as tea kettles, stockpots and kitchen utensils.

This Marseille French Oven from Le Creuset is a type of multipurpose cast-iron cookware

Just recently, Le Creuset launched their latest color — Marseille — and we wanted to highlight the beauty of this soothing and tranquil color by showing this amazing cookware in action. This delicious and savory recipe for Ribollita, a hearty Tuscan stew, can be prepared using a Le Creuset 5.5-quart French oven. Recipe created by Chef Nathan Lyon for Le Creuset. Click to see the ingredients list.

  1. Over medium-low heat, add the bacon and 1 Tbsp. olive oil to the Le Creuset oven. Cook for approximately 5 – 6 minutes, stirring occasionally until much of the fat has rendered off and the bacon is just beginning to get nice and crispy.
  2. Add onions, stir occasionally and continue to cook until soft and translucent, about 6 – 7 minutes.
  3. Add the sausage, carrots, fennel, chili flakes and a few good grinds of pepper and continue to cook for approximately 10 minutes. Stir occasionally, breaking up the sausage with the back of a Le Creuset spatula.
  4. Add 2 Tbsp. olive oil, stir in the tomato paste and garlic. Cook for 3 more minutes.
  5. Stir in the tomatoes, chicken stock, beans, 3/4 tsp. salt and kale.
  6. Increase the heat to high until the soup starts to simmer. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes.
  7. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Serve with toasted baguettes in the stew or on the side. Serves 6-8.
